Frequently Asked Questions

  • Acupuncture falls under the umbrella of Chinese Medicine, a holistic system of health care practised and developed over 2,500 years. Yin and Yang are the core components of Chinese Medicine, and when imbalances occur, illness can arise. Acupuncture is utilised to stimulate the body’s own healing response to restore and maintain its’ natural balance

  • Acupuncture works by using filiform needles at specific points on the body to access the Qi (pronounced ‘chee’) and help return the body into a balanced state. Qi is often translated as ‘energy’. However, another useful translation can be ‘circulation’.

Acupuncture has been proven to increase circulation and blood flow to specific areas of the body. This helps to encourage signalling of the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes a ‘rest and digest’ response (rather than ‘fight or flight’) in order to reduce inflammation and pain.

  • Chinese Medicine is based on the philosophy that each person’s health is a result of their physical condition, emotional wellbeing, diet, exercise, relationships and lifestyle. This means that each consultation and treatment is tailored specifically to you and your presenting health concern; no two treatments are the same.

You can expect a combination of body work which includes acupuncture, cupping and Gua Sha, as well as diet & lifestyle advice. Where appropriate, I also prescribe Chinese herbal medicine.

People are often pleasently surprised with how relaxing acupuncture is. You feel feel grounded and calm, and many experience a feeling of wellbeing that lasts for hours.

  • No, acupuncture needles are filiform needles that are incredibly thin and flexible, similar to a cat’s whisker! You should not feel any pain with the needles. However, a dull, tingling or warm sensation can be expected with the nervous system response that we are trying to achieve.

You are always in the drivers seat, and if at any point you feel uncomfortable, I aim to provide a safe space that allows for the communication of concerns or queries.
